Ok, where do I start, well, anyone who knows me will know I'm not given to few words so I’ll try and keep this under the length of a Stephen King novel.
I was born..... Went to school....... Went to another school...... Learnt a lot about computers.... Went to work..... Became a DJ..... Became a producer..... Came to work for RHB!
Too short? Ok, well, I’ve always been interested in music, I was fascinated by records as a kid, in fact, so fascinated I used to drive my family mad by putting their finger on the edge of a dinner plate pretending it was a record that when I got the chance to get involved with a school’s radio system I was hooked. I had my own show for 2 years and my opening theme was Axel F. When I had to move schools we didn’t have a radio system there but I was a bit older by then and started getting into DJ’ing by – yes, you’ve guessed it, carrying record boxes for another DJ to get in for free. I started out by just playing an odd track here and there when the main DJ needed a break or refreshments or both – two turntables and the ability to match the speed of the songs (beat mixing) had me hooked completely.
After leaving school, I wandered about a bit in a haze of doing different jobs for a bit, moving here and there but never leaving music totally behind. When I lived in Blackpool for a while from 1999 to 2004 I got involved with internet radio for a short time but some technical difficulties stopped us from really making it work as we were all in different parts of the country.
The next few years is a bit of a blur, I managed a pub for a while, travelled about a fair bit, grew my existing business, DJ’d different places, loved, lost, had my heart broken more than once – oh dear, this is sounding like a letter to “Our Tune” on Radio 1 (we have that song that Simon Bates read the letters over and use it comically for soap-boxing or just generally having a laugh with people) and then one day in September 2009, I was asked to help out with the technical side of a new internet radio station – well, I needed a bit of up-to-date inside information so I turned to life-long friend and chairman of RHB, Dave Peacock who made the fatal mistake of opening the mic and telling me to say something on air.
That was September, it’s now December, the application process takes a little time to go through but it’s worth it. You get to meet a lot of people doing the ward liaison work (which I love doing and get told off by Billy Bass if I don’t go), the rest of the team are great, you get to meet random people and have on-the-fly studio guests, I’m responsible for filling up the jingle section of our computer system with various TV character quotes to use as well as being hounded by Charlie Tuna to do a set of jingles for his show and if that’s not enough, I'm looking forward to having my own show weekday mornings, starting 2010.
There’s already a world-record challenge in the pipeline – but it’s not for the longest broadcast – stay tuned to find out more on that and I keep a blog of things to do with becoming a presenter/volunteer at RHB which is worth a read if you like a good laugh and if the webmaster’s nice enough, the link to http://www.computer-geek.co.uk will make it onto my profile page here.
And now the small print: Views expressed on this page or other sites linked to from it are not the views or opinions of RHB or its other members, terms and conditions apply, your take-away coffee may go cold if you leave the lid off, unplugging your satellite box instead of leaving it on standby will prevent it from recording things and computer keyboard’s don’t have an any key.
